J 06587 − 5558 — A Very Unusual Polarised Radio Source
We have found a peculiar radio source J06587−5558 in the field of one of the hottest known clusters of galaxies 1E0657−56. It is slightly extended, highly polarised (54% at 8.8 GHz) and has a very steep spectrum, with α ∼ −1 at 1.3 GHz, steepening to ∼ −1.5 at 8.8 GHz (S ∝ ν). No extragalactic sources are known with such high integrated polarisation, and sources with spectra as steep as this ar...
متن کاملUsing Small Radio Telescopes for Very Long Baseline Interferometry
Throughout the summer development has continued on the next generation of the Small Radio Telescope for use as a Very Long Baseline Interferometry type interferometer. This paper discusses the difficulties with setting up this new interferometer and presents some results obtained using this small radio telescope interferometer. We used 3 small radio telescopes to form one baseline of about 5 me...
متن کاملPitch perfect: how fruit flies control their body pitch angle.
Flapping insect flight is a complex and beautiful phenomenon that relies on fast, active control mechanisms to counter aerodynamic instability. To directly investigate how freely flying Drosophila melanogaster control their body pitch angle against such instability, we perturbed them using impulsive mechanical torques and filmed their corrective maneuvers with high-speed video. Combining experi...
متن کاملThe double radio source 3 C 343 . 1 : A galaxy - QSO pair with very different redshifts
The strong radio source 3C343.1 consists of a galaxy and a QSO separated by no more than about 0.25′′. The chance of this being an accidental superposition is conservatively ∼ 1 × 10. The z = 0.344 galaxy is connected to the z = 0.750 QSO by a radio bridge. The numerical relation between the two redshifts is that predicted from previous associations. This pair is an extreme example of many simi...
متن کاملMammalian Red Cells as a Source of "small Particles"
1. Small particles essentially similar to those previously isolated from other tissues have been isolated from mammalian red blood cells (horse blood). 2. About one-third of the dry weight of the particles is lipids. 3. The particles produce hemolysins against the homologous erythrocytes when inoculated into a foreign species. 4. The fact that the particles can be isolated from mammalian red ce...
